Press Release From Gateway California 2010:
GATEWAY CALIFORNIA EVENT HELPS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BUSINESS THRIVE IN THE GLOBAL MARKETPLACE

Gateway California, the premier export/import forum on the West Coast, held October 29, 2010 at the South San Francisco Conference Center was a resounding success.  This event was hosted by the Northern California World Trade Center, in conjunction with the Port of Oakland, Port of West Sacramento, Port of San Francisco, San Francisco International Airport, Sacramento County Airport System and platinum event and workshop sponsor, Citibank.

The diverse trade show featured everything from local jurisdictions, to finance groups and trade organizations.  In addition, the Citibank sponsored workshop series focused on topics ranging from financing international trade to cross-cultural communication and business negotiations.  The content packed event was capped off by a stellar executive luncheon program.  By the end of Gateway California, it was abundantly clear that Northern California is open for international business.

Some of the highlights of Gateway California include:

  • Over 700 people in attendance, including 37 influential, senior executives from Shanghai, China. The delegation from Shanghai represented high-level representatives from multiple industries including, pharmaceuticals, seafood trading and distribution, education, international trading, wine, business consulting, technology and manufacturing.
  • A robust workshop series sponsored by Citibank.  The series offered a dozen courses to choose from, led by 24 different industry insiders and leaders.  Nearly 170 attendees participated in the Citibank sponsored workshop series.
  • The trade show floor was sold out for exhibitors!  On the trade show floor, attendees and exhibitors were able to network and connect with over 400 trade show attendees.
  • The standing room only Executive Luncheon, comprised of 200 leaders from Northern California and abroad, featured Joseph K. Hurd III, Senior Director, Export Promotion and Trade Policy for the International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, Michael Jacob, Vice President of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Michael Faust, President and CEO of the Northern California World Trade Center and Steven Fiata, SVP, Regional Sales Manager for California and Nevada, Citibank.
  • This event set the groundwork for business growth both domestically and internationally in the months and years to come.  The NorCalWTC has received positive feedback from both attendees, as well as new contacts who were unable to participate in Gateway CA this year, but are already looking for ways to engage next year.  Since the beginning of the summer, Gateway California and its sponsors were highlighted in an enhanced marketing campaign that included e-correspondence, partner advertisements, speaking engagements, and the social networks of Facebook and Twitter.

In the end, Gateway California was a fantastic opportunity for all those who attended the event.  This export/import forum put the right people in the room together, providing participants with the ability to create and foster partnerships that will help increase their business operations and allow individuals and companies to become more competitive in the global market.

As President Obama moves forward with the NEI, Northern California needs to be prepared and poised to capitalize on this effort. Discussions like the one had at Gateway California’s Executive Luncheon is the first step in setting the groundwork for future growth and development of Northern California’s goods movement system and the businesses who will be expanding their overseas markets through the NEI.
